How long have you lived in NYC?

I have lived in New York since March 2014.

When/Why did you move?

I moved because my husband got a job in New York. He works for Philips. It was a great opportunity so we did not hesitate to accept it. I have traveled and worked all over the world. I have lived in the Netherlands (of course), Belgium and France.

Mathilde VaesFor my previous jobs I have traveled all across Europe and for leisure I have among others visited: Australia, Bali, Jamaica, Egypt, Dominican Republic and Cuba.

What is your favorite neighborhood and why?
The beauty of NYC is that every neighborhood has it’s own charm! I like Meatpacking District because of the industrial look, but hipster vibe with all it’s nice restaurants, clubs, galleries, Ganzevoort Market and the proximity to Chelsea
. But I also like the new and upcoming neighborhood Bushwick because of the street art and cool restaurants and bars. I cannot forget to mention Central Park. It isn’t a neighborhood, but I do consider it my own backyard; ). It’s a nice place to relax, have a nice walk, take a picnic at Sheep Meadow and have fun!

Favorite restaurant(s), why?
Where do I begin? I’t impossible to make a choice! I like Catch in Meatpacking District, it’s priced a bit on the high end, but their sushi is delicious. They have lovely seafood dishes and their deserts look like art.  Gotham West Market has different, good priced, restaurants. They also have a great beer range to choose from. For ice cream I like Ample Hills, they have a creamery just around the corner of President Street.

Hidden gems, insider tips?
Buy some food at the shops at Columbus Circle and go picnicking in Central Park at Sheep meadow. Visit Smorgasburg; it’s like a food festival. There are lots of local restaurants / food trucks and you can try a lot of different dishes. During summertime on Saturday they are at the waterfront in Williamsburg and on Sunday at Brooklyn Bridge Park (there you can eat your food while looking at one of the most amazing views in the city).
Go to Bushwick and take a look at the amazing street art projects! It’s really cool! Afterwards go and grab a pizza at Roberta’s. They grow their own fresh herbs, you can play table football and there is a great atmosphere!
